What do they do?
Little Rock is an inclusive early childhood development centre, situated in Kibera, one of Africa’s largest slums. It was started by Lilly Oyare who believed it to be deeply unfair that children in Kibera are already disadvantaged when they start primary school because of where they were born. So Little Rock went about building an inclusive early childhood development centre that now teaches over 400 pupils.
In addition to the school, Little Rock has an established parents’ support group to provide counselling to families and supporting them to access healthcare and employment. It also has an after-school club, where they continue to support children that have left the school through the use of the library, after-school tutoring, sports coaching and creative classes. Little Rock has been a partner of Able Child Africa since 2007. Our partnership has significantly contributed to the growth and development of the disability-inclusive education centre. In 2012 we facilitated a long term successful partnership between Little Rock and Euromoney Institutional Investors who played a significant role in funding the development of the school and supporting us with financial capacity building for the organisation.
Over the last 13 years, we have invested a significant amount of our time in building the organisational capacity of Little Rock and have seen the organisation grow into a flourishing school and local institution. We continue to support Little Rock with their early childhood development programmes as well as financial management training and mentorship, fundraising, strategic planning and investment in their income-generating activities. We also continue to provide Governance support to its Trustees.
The financial and operational management support from Able Child Africa is exactly what we need to make Little Rock more sustainable.– Lily Oyare, Director at Little Rock
