Inclusive Education – Little Rock
Melissa, Elizabeth, Kennedy, Denise, Patrick, Hadija and Felicity are all some of Little Rock’s success stories. The following case studies are provided by Little Rock and written in their own words.
Melissa
Melissa is six years old and has cerebral palsy. She joined Little Rock’s special class in 2006 where she has since excelled in her academic studies. As a result of her progress, she has been integrated into the kindergarten with other able-bodied children. She is expected to continue on to primary school soon. Her physical disability is being addressed through therapy which has resulted in significant improvement in her movement.
Elizabeth
Elizabeth is an autistic child who joined the special class at Little Rock in 2007. She has since shown significant improvement and is now able to follow simple instructions like cleaning her hands after eating and sitting still in class for 10 minutes.
Kennedy
Kennedy is six years old and has cerebral palsy which means that he walks with considerable difficulty. However, he is determined to walk and is a fast learner. He joined Little Rock in 2007 and is known for his love of story books, spending much of his time in the library, reading.
Denise
Denise was orphaned in 2005. She is eight years old and paralysed down her left hand side. Since joining the special class at Little Rock, she has been integrated with the other children in Kindergarten and has made excellent progress with her reading.
Patrick
Patrick is an outspoken nine-year-old who joined Little Rock’s special class in 2006. He suffered a meningitis attack several years ago which has affected his movement and speech. It also means that he cannot finish his work at the speed of other children and he is not yet ready to continue on to Grade One. However, he can express himself very well and is making good progress with his letters and numbers.
Hadija
Hadija is five years old and, an only child, she was born with Down’s Syndrome. She joined Little Rock in 2007 and has excelled at colouring and paintwork.
Felicity
Felicity has cerebral palsy and is unable to use her limbs. She used to attend the Little Rock ECD centre three times a week but on the days she didn’t go, she would cry at the sight of her brother leaving with his schoolbag in the morning. Felicity now attends every day and her mother says that she has never been happier.
